If you advertise on Facebook, you're familiar with the Facebook Ads Manager interface. In it 'detailed segmentation' of the ad group creation process, you can enter various targeting options for Facebook ads, such as: B. behaviors, demographics, or interests.

For a full list of Facebook targeting options, click "Search' to open a tree showing a list of Facebook categories with all the different interests you can target with ads. Think of categories like "fitness and wellness" or "entertainment."

We have included the full list of Facebook interests in a later section of this article for your reference. But as you will soon find outthis can't be the complete list of interests on facebook... it's so short that it can't be the list of all interests on facebook.

It's more like a full Facebook interest targeting list.categories,a list of Facebook categories. Within these categories are many other specific interests.

I'll show you how to find these "hidden" ones.

Do you want to know what I discovered in the Facebook Marketing API?

The Facebook interest list in Ads Manager

First, you should know that Facebook Ads Manager limits the number of interest suggestions shown to advertisers to a list of only 25 interests.

So if you select an interest from the list of Facebook categories in the tree structure, let's take the example "Meditation", you can click on suggestions to see 25 interests related to "Meditation".

You will find suggestions such as “yoga” or “mindfulness”.

So far so good, right?These interests are really relevant to our main theme of meditation. la laThe only problem is: this is a BIG audience of millions of people.

You can also type "meditation" instead of selecting it from the menu. As you type, Facebook will again show you 25 suggestions for related (targeted) interests.

On this occasion you will find suggestions such as "Buddhist Meditation" or "Transcendental Meditation". These audiences are much smaller and more targeted compared to the LARGE audiences we've seen before. Much better Facebook advertising interests to target.

Despite this, Facebook only shows 25 suggestions.

This is just a fraction of all the related interests available for targeting.

The Facebook interest list in Audience Insights

Your last option to find other related interests is to go to Facebook Audience Insights and type in the interest, for example, "Buddhist Meditation," to drill down into the audience that has that interest.interests of Facebook viewers.

In the Page Likes section, you'll often find highly relevant interests ranked by their affinity score. This is a score that indicates the probability that the selected audience (in this case, people interested in "Buddhist Meditation") will like these Facebook pages.

A high affinity score indicates that your audience is likely to like those pages. In this example, I found interests like "Tara Brach" and "Spirit Rock Meditation Center." Looking at the graph, people who like "Buddhist meditation" are 2471 times more likely to like it.Tara Brach's Facebook pagecompared to everyone else on Facebook.

While these interests are still a short list, they are highly relevant.

And… some of them can be targeted with ads, but not all.

Since Facebook doesn't show which ones, you have to manually enter them (one by one) into Facebook Ads Manager to see if anything shows up. It is a very big frustration, there are no words for it...

So why are some pages able to be targeted and others not?

Facebook Pages vs. Facebook Interests

On Facebook, "Pages" and "Interests" are two completely different things, but they can be linked. There are millions of Pages on Facebook, but not all of them are linked to an interest that can be targeted with ads.

In fact, many are not.

So if you search profiles of people who should be your ideal customers to find the Facebook Pages they like, there's a high chance they won't be able to target them with ads.

It is completely random which Facebook Pages also have an associated interest.

Most of the time, these are pages with a large following, but this is not always the case. There are also many smaller Pages with only a few thousand followers that may be of interest.

It's totally random. And it is always changing.

Specific interests appear and disappear at will.

How do I choose the best interests for Facebook ads?

I showed you two methods for Facebook interest searches.

Here's how to choose the best and most relevant Facebook ad interests for your campaigns. This is always easier to explain with an example.

The "You know but no one else knows" test.

Let's say you have a business that sells clothing, equipment, and accessories for golf enthusiasts. How would you target your potential customers?

Many advertisers would say "target interest at famous golfers like Tiger Woods." And of course, you could do that. It could work. But the interest of "Tiger Woods" has a global audience of 2 million people.

Does everyone have this passion for golf? Probably not.

Everyone and their mother knows who Tiger Woods is.

It's much more effective to target an interest like "Titleist," a niche golf brand. People who have this interest are probably golfers. Most non-golfers are not familiar with this brand. You've probably never heard of him.

This passes the tests and makes it a great target for Facebook ads.

Public interests versus hidden interests

The above 25 interest suggestions that Facebook makes to you are called "public interests." It displays them in the Facebook Ads Manager interface and in Facebook Audience Insights for all advertisers on the platform.

Currently there are more than 6 million.

The rest, the interests that you can target but aren't listed on Facebook, are called "hidden interests."

They just make them available through the FB Marketing API so software developers can build value-added software around them for features that Facebook doesn't integrate into their own platform.
